Monday 17th December AGM and shared Christmas Picnic to follow

We shall take a gentle amble around the Hawea/Newcastle track including the Butterfields wetlands area where we will find a secluded spot for the AGM.
We  then return to the cars which have previously been parked under some large shady trees to enjoy our Christmas Picnic.

Leader;  Jane Baker

At the Wanaka Walkers away week in Glenorchy attended by 36 walkers a poll was taken about whether the WW group would support a proposed subscription of $40.00 per person to buy two GPS/UHF 2 way communication devices. These would enable the Trip Leader to be in touch with the 'tail end charlie' during the walks and give us a reliable way of communicating any difficulties or incidents on the walks. This was supported by a large majority and donations were made immediately by many present.

Monday's Walk: 10th December 2018

Deep Gully - Eastern Hills loop track 10.5 km (3 - 5 hr according to DOC)

We will park in the Sandy Point conservation area car park on SH8a (on Wanaka to Tarras Highway).  About 5 - 7 mins drive from the Luggate bridge, a small car park on the right. The tracks start across the road from (and slightly north of) the Sandy Point car park.
A poled route ascends the Eastern Hills Track up onto the Grandview ridge for great views over the upper Clutha valley, before descending  Deep Gully back to the starting point. (the usual way is the opposite but the thinking is the best views will be from the top and down Deep Gully).
There is 680 metres of climbing/descending with 95% of the climbing in the first 5km.

Two notices
1. On 17 Dec there will be a short walk to the lunch spot where the AGM will be held.  Don't forget your lunch! There are vacancies on the committee.

2. There was a meeting of those who took part in the Glenorchy walk-fest at which it was agreed by unanimous vote that a GPS/shortwave radio should be purchased by the club.  A donation has already been given but a further $40.00 per person from each club member is required to complete the purchase.

Mt Shrimpton track- Monday 22 October 2018

We drive to Makarora to what was DOC’s Makarora Base. The track leads off the Nature walk and climbs up to the bush line to give good views of the Southern Alps, particularly Mt Albert.  While only a short distance (6km) it is an 800m climb and the DOC estimate is a five hour round trip. (Mt Roy is 16km and 1260m climb).

The Nature walk section takes about 15 minutes (1 km).  Starting from the car park, just north of the Makarora Tourist Centre, this looped track passes through podocarp and silver beech forest with good specimens of matai, miro, kahikatea and rimu. Another feature is a pitsaw display, illustrating this pioneering timber milling technique.

Note: The upgrade to the parking area adjacent to our usual meeting place is ongoing, so we will meet at 0930 at the Wanaka Station Park parking area in Homestead Close.

Mondays Walk 24th September 2018

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF MEETING VENUE. WANAKA STATION PARK (Homestead Close Road, which is signposted on main road)

The weather looks borderline  again although it cannot be as bad as last week!!. Meet at the usual time of 9.30am. at Wanaka Station Park which is the further along the lake front. Take a right turn at Homestead Close as you drive out of town.( The normal meeting place is being revamped by the council)

Because of not a great weather forecast we shall stick close to town and be walking a flat loop around Hawea, hopefully sheltered from any southerly weather.

Start at  the car park at Lake Hawea camp ground .  Walk around the base of the dam to the Hawea Albert Town track till we get to the Cemetery Road entrance. We walk down the track beside Cemetery Road to Muir Road. Walk to the lake front then turn right towards Gladstone and find somewhere on the lakefront for lunch if it is dry. Retrace along waterfront back to the cars. Walk can be varied from 8 to 12 Kms depending on weather and we can stop at the Hawea cafe which has great cakes and coffee.

The weather looks terrible with cold rain/snow. I shall be at the new starting point at Wanaka Station Park which is the further along the lake front by the start of Waterfall Creek Track at the usual time of 9.30am.( The normal meeting place is being revamped by the council)

If it is pouring with rain then those who are mad enough to turn up can decide what to do. 1. Go home. 2. Walk to a coffee shop. 3. do a short planned walk (see below)

if it is OK we will be walking a gentle loop around Hawea, hopefully sheltered from the southerly weather.

Start at  the car park at Lake Hawea camp ground .  Walk around the base of the dam to the Hawea Albert Town track till we get to the Cemetery Road entrance. From Wanaka-Mt Aspiring Road turn right onto West Wanaka Road. Go across the bridge over the  Matukituki River to the car park at the end of the road at Homestead Bay. You will need to go through 2 farm gates. 4WD car may be best if wet but been dry recently.
The Minaret Burn track is undulating and although may be muddy in places should not be slippery. There are a couple of small streams to cross but with care should not get feet wet.
Lunch will be at Colquhouns Beach. Then return along same track.

Monday 3rd September

The weather forecast is not promising, but in order of good weather to terrible the possibilities are:

1) Bannockburn - Cornish Point Road - One end of the Cairnmuir Trail starts here and we will walk up to the Musterers Hut for lunch

2) Boundary Creek - between Hawea and Makarora there is a 4 wheel drive track that leads somewhat steeply up to a high point where we can lunch overlooking the gorge below.

3) Failing all else there is always coffee

Monday's Walk - 235d July 2018

Destination: McPhies Ridge. From the Cluden Stream car park this is a 350 m climb over 5 km to a viewpoint over the Lindis Valley. If the weather deteriorates to the point of being unpleasant I will reserve the right to beat a hasty retreat to the Tarras café.

Monday 16th July

We will drive out to the eastern side of Lake Hawea and walk up the Pakituhi track, which is part of the Te Araroa Trail.
From the carpark [ which is 300m further up the road ] the steep in places track, zigzags up to a saddle where there are great views to the west.

The weather report is looking not so good, so we will collectively decide on an alternative, perhaps closer to home when we meet.

Monday's Walk 9th July

The forecast is for occasional rain and sleety showers, so a short walk on the Matakitaki Track is proposed.

It's a 15 min. (20 km) drive to the car park at the West Wanaka bridge.

The track is an easy 2.4 km walk up the true right of the Matukituki River. We have permission from Glendhu Station to continue on from the end of the track if we wish to explore further.

Leader: Chris Kjelgaard

Monday's Walk - 2nd July 2018

Destination: Hillend lookout

A short and local walk up to the cell phone towers above Hillend Station from Timber Creek on the Cardrona Road (4.5 km each way) for one of the best views over Wanaka and Roys Bay in the region.

Mike Scurr at Hillend Station has given us permission to cross his land, but has asked that we clear the property as quickly as possible after midday as he has a carrot drop planned for the afternoon. Our options are therefore to have a quick and early lunch at the high point (785 m) followed by a fast exit, or to defer lunch until our return to the cars. If we go for a later lunch we also have the option of walking down to the Cardona River from the Larches car park for a riverside picnic.

To ensure we use the available time as efficiently as possible, please wear your walking shoes from the outset so we can start walking as soon as we reconvene at Timber Creek.

Walk Leader: Martin Unwin

Monday 25th June

Nine Mile Historic Reserve

Drive 30 min. to Tarras, then on towards the Pass for about 15km (10 min.)  Turn left onto Old Faithful Road (sign is opposite Timburn Road) where we will park.

There should be fresh snow on the hills, so cool, but hopefully some sun.  Wear warm clothes, bring wet weather gear. Boots will be useful on the (possibly) muddy gravel road.

This old route through the Pass is a flat and easy 6km walk, following the Lindis river to the Nine Mile Historic Reserve, with the remains of the old stone Lindis Hotel. Old gold diggings can be seen nearby (from Otago's first gold rush in 1861) along with the remains of the concrete hut built by the last miner.

We will find a lunch spot and return by the same route.

Walk Leader: Chris Kjelgaard

Sunday, June 17, 2018

Monday 18th June

Plan A we will walk to Mt Mason which is between the Kawarau Gorge and Gibbston on the left side of the highway.
It's about 1.30- 1.45hrs to the top but the first section of the track (15 mins/100metres) is rather steep - just think of it as an extreme warm up. While there are a couple of shorter steep bits the track is not like the first view. Any steep bits after the first piece are interspersed with easier gradients which are well used to.
Mt Rosa comes into view just as we turn off the track to a nice knoll for lunch. A further 10-15 min walk up the knoll will reward you with 360 degree views incl Mt. Rosa. A quiet amble back down to the carpark completes the walk.

Plan B Gibbston River walk from Peregrine Winery to the historic Kawarau Bridge.

Monday 11th June

Long Acre Track - Chain Hills

We drive over to the Lindis Valley and turn onto Goodger Road and follow a 4 WD track to the furthest DOC carpark at Pleasant Valley.
Initially the walk follows the valley floor but then climbs steeply to the high point where it intersects with the Chain Hills track distance approx 7km.
We will have lunch facing the St Bathans range and return our steps back the same way.

We should be above any inversion but temperatures could be cool so make sure to bring warm layers, possibility of afternoon tea at Tarras on our return trip.

Leader: Ruth Harrison

Sunday, June 3, 2018

Monday's Walk 4th June 2018

Alfern Reserve and beyond

Starting from the Queensbury car park at the northern end of the Pisa Range (500 m) we'll walk up to the Alfern Reserve and continue on to a suitable lunch rock at about the 940 m mark. If the gods are smiling on us we may well break through the inversion layer somewhere above 800 m, to be rewarded with great views towards the Lindis country and the St Bathans Range. Dress warm.

Monday's walk - 23rd April

The weather is looking good - so we shall do Brian's Mystery Walk. Brian & Marjon found it a couple of weeks ago - a loop starting in Glencoe Road. But on Monday we will start instead in Arrowtown - parking in Ford Street (on the right before getting into town) - cross the footbridge over the Arrow River and climb up Tobins Track. At the top we follow Glencoe Road for a kilometre before a stile leads to the Brackens Saddle Track (bring your camera).
Lunch will be in front of the fireplace of the homestead on Brackens Saddle, with beautiful views all around. Then it is all down hill (except for the bits that go up ) - we descend to and cross New Chum Gully, climb to the junction with the New Chum Gully Track overlooking Arrowtown, then down (beware the slippy mud) to meet Tobins Track and back to the cars.

Monday's Walk - 2 April 2108 - Easter Monday

Minaret Burn Track to Colquhouns Beach

Easter Monday, a good reason to stay close to home!
From Wanaka - Mt Aspiring Road past Glendhu Bay turn right onto West Wanaka Road, across the one lane bridge over the Matukituki River follow the road through 2 farm gates to carpark at the end of this road.
This well formed track provides easy access to beautiful beaches along Wanaka's western shore. From Homestead Bay carpark the track gently undulates towards small, sheltered Colquhouns Beach where we will have our lunch while enjoying the views over Mou Waho Island, Mt Gold, Mt Burke and surroundings.
From there we will return the same way, approx. 14 km return trip.
Please bring suitable footwear, water, lunch, rain gear, suntan lotion and sandfly repellent. For the brave and keen; bring togs & towel too!

Lilico Spur
Drive to Clyde and turn off onto Springvale Rd. Travel along Springvale until Waikerkeri Valley Road. There is a DOC car park at the end of this road.
This walk is over a poled route on a farm track. The walk climbs up (approx 600 metres) until you are under Leaning Rock - an unusual view of this feature. Lilico Spur is also completely visible and if anyone is keen there is a route up this very steep spur.

Rob Roy Glacier
It is an hours drive to Raspberry Creek and we would be better with 4 WD cars and people who are confident going through the odd ford and miles of gravel road.
It is an 1hr - 11/2hr walk up to the top glacier view, this is a tramping track so its rough in places. Depending on how long it takes up it may be a slightly early lunch but as the track is popular
we will probably push on a little up the valley for a peaceful lunch spot and good views.

There is no charge for this walk other than the normal petrol contribution but if you would rather take the Chondola please see the post below this one and feel free to join the 10am group which leaves from the same spot in town.
