Monday's Walk: 30 January 2017

An optimistic read of tomorrow's forecast suggests light and variable winds before the nor'wester returns mid-afternoon.

Plan A (light winds): Old Woman Hut. Drive to Duffers Saddle on the Nevis Road and climb 270 m over 6 km to Old Woman Hut. Subalpine walk with great views.

Plan B (strong winds): Bannockburn Bridge to Kawarau Gorge. Undulating 5 km through old gold workings along the north bank of the Kawarau River.

Haast Pass Bridle Path and lookout

With the promise of a fine morning before the afternoon nor'wester kicks in yet again we'll return to one of last winter's destinations on the Haast Pass Bridle Path. This sheltered bush walk climbs from Davis Flat to the Haast Pass, and thence to a scenic lookout. Waverers may be encouraged by the prospect of afternoon coffee at Makarora.
