Monday 25th December

Merry Christmas to all - there is no walk this Monday.

Only informal arrangements are in place for January walks. Someone may post a proposed walk or not.
However, if you would like to walk turn up at the usual time and place with your lunch etc and you are very
likely to find others also wanting to walk.

Normal walk arrangements start again in February and walks will be posted on this site as usual.

Best wishes to all for a Happy New Year.

Monday 18th December walk plan

Kanuka Track,  Bendigo Conservation Area

This is a 10km loop track in the  bush above the vineyards of Bendigo starting from Logantown.  Enjoy fantastic views across Lake Dunstan, Kanuka landscape, rocky crags and relics of the mining years.  DOC reckon it will take about five hours.  Be prepared with plenty of water, gaiters and a pioneering spirit as we thrash through the bush.

Monday's Walk 11th December

Grandview Ridge Track - Deep Gully

Drive to the Sandy Point car park on the Wanaka  Tarras road approximately 17 km from Wanaka.  From there we will climb up in the direction of the telecommunications towers and then return via Deep Gully having refreshed ourselves with lunch at a suitable viewpoint over the Upper Clutha valley. This is definitely a circular walk!  No water or shade available on this trip. Most of the walking is on 4WD tracks - some steep sections.

Today we are going to Alexandra to the Flat Top Hill Conservation Area where we plan to walk the Flat Top Hill Trampers track. Rocky tracks but nothing too steep and strenuous although there is ups and downs.
The thyme should be in bloom and we will lunch overlooking the Roxburgh Gorge. It will be sunburn temperatures so hats and plenty of water are required.

Monday's Walk 6 November

Cardrona Cromwell Pack Track. An exploratory walk up the first few km of the historic Cardona to Comwell Pack Track above Lowburn. This has been closed to the public for the last few years, but a realigned route has recently been negotiated with the landowner who is keen to receive feedback on its suitability for groups such as ours. We will climb up to a suitable viewpoint and lunch spot before returning the same way.

Emerald Bluffs and Paddock Bay Circuit

As planned for last Monday, we will drive out along the Wanaka – Mount Aspiring Road, past Glendhu Bay, turn right into West Wanaka Road and on to the Emerald Bluffs lake access track carpark. The wetlands includes a lagoon with lots of birdlife and trout, and the snow-capped peaks of the Buchanan mountain range as a backdrop”.

From Emerald Bay we follow a fisherperson’s track alongside Paddock Bay to Buchanan Rise Road and return to the carpark.

Monday's Walk - 16 Oct 2107

John’s Creek Lookout

This is a high point above John’s Creek which gives great views across Lake Hawea towards the Hunter River valley and Corner Peak.  We park the cars at the boat ramp adjacent to the Lake Hawea camping ground, walk along the lake to John’s Creek, and then along the Timaru Creek Road for about 200  metres to the start of the Breast Hill Track.  A short climb up the track takes us to the lookout.

The walk starts and finishes at Nichols and takes us across the bridge and down to the lookout on the Cromwell – Alex road.  We cross and walk up to the reservoir built in 1875 to provide drinking water for Cromwell. From the reservoir and its great views we walk along the top of the Cromwell Slide, check the condition of the survey pegs used to detect land movement, down into Firewood Creek and back to the Nichols Café for goodies.

Monday's Walk - 25 September 2017

Plan A : Nook Road and beyond

With the weather less than ideal last Monday, we postponed our walk alongside the Grandview Creek which runs just beyond the old Nook Road nursery in Hawea.

This is a beautiful walk along what is now the start of the Grandview Mountain Track. The walk rises gently for the first km or so and then climbs a little up the side of the valley along a wide and grassy farm track. Despite the recent rains, it is not at all muddy or slippery, although you will have to traverse Grandview Creek a few times at the start of the walk. So you might want to bring along a second lot of footwear to change into for your drive home.

It's one of those walks where you can go as far or as little as you want because we will all be returning by the same route to the DOC carpark which is located just beyond the end of Nook Road.

This is our last opportunity to do this walk before the track is closed for lambing.

Plan B : John's Creek to Lake Hawea lookout

If it looks like rain, then we will walk from John's Creek alongside Lake Hawea and then climb up to the lookout over the lake.

Leader : Brian Kusel

Monday's Walk - 18 September 2017

Grandview Mountain Track

Got "cabin fever" with so many rainy days of late? Then this beautiful walk should be just the ticket.

The walk goes from just beyond the old Nook Road Nursery in Hawea and then follows Grandview Creek for a while before heading uphill along a wide farm track to a suitable spot for lunch. The return walk downhill offers even more amazing views. About 12km in total.

It looks like the weather gods may be kind to us, but who knows! So make sure you bring some wet weather gear. You should also note that the lower part of the walk traverses the quite narrow Grandview Creek six times and you will definitely be getting your feet wet. So you might want to bring along a second lot of footwear.

We will depart the Wanaka lakefront at 9.30am as usual, then drive to nearby Hawea and up to the DOC carpark about 100 metres beyond the old Nook Road Nursery to start the walk.

Lack of Leaders for September Walks

This month has not been covered by a trip leader.
Brian Gilbert has offered to do the first Monday (4th Sept)…thanks Brian.
So we are looking for anyone who can cover just one week at a time or more if possible. Please email me if you can fill the gap. There are many people who want to walk and if that is you perhaps you could also volunteer to lead the walk!
I will be away from the 12th so please be in touch before then so we can set this up. janempw@gmail.com

Also we have no leaders for November or December so if you are willing to fill those gaps or can do a week or two then please put your hand up and let me know. Thank you.

Fwd: Monday's Walk - 21st August 2015

Weather tomorrow: Cloudy with morning drizzle, becoming fine afternoon. Low cloud returning evening. Southerlies dying out afternoon. (9 deg max)

In view of the weather forecast we will keep it shortish.
Hawea and Newcastle tracks- 12.5 Kms.  Many other places will be muddy and slippery so I plan a relatively flat walk down Hawea Track from the Camphill Road car park. Then loop round the Newcastle track, stopping at the river side just over the  swing bridge at Albert Town (7.5Kms) for an early lunch. Return along Hawea River track to the car park.

If it turns out to be a nice day will consider a change of plan to Colquhouns Beach.

Monday's Walk- 14th August 2017

Deans Bank and Dublin Bay Track.

May be  a few morning showers then fine spells. We will go to Albert Town Camp site and park by the entrance to Deans Bank. First half of the Walk will be along the Deans Bank track. Unlikely to be many cyclists on a Monday but back marker will need to shout out if cyclists appear. The track is narrow in places. When we get to the Lake Outlet area we join the Dublin Bay track and walk further round the lake until we find somewhere for lunch. If we are feeling energetic we can walk to Dublin Bay. We return along the Dublin Bay Road/track to Albert Town. Distance between 12 and 15kms(all way to Dublin Bay Road),
Suggest boots as there will be plenty of mud.

Monday's Walk - 7th August 2017

Lake Hawea Loop

The day should be OK with no rain. After today's rain all the tracks are going to be muddy so we will walk on flat well established paths.

Start at  the car park at Lake Hawea camp ground.  Walk around the base of the dam to the Hawea Albert Town track till we get to the Cemetery Road entrance. We walk down the track beside Cemetry Road to Muir Road past the new subdivisions. Walk to the lake front then turn right towards Gladstone and find somewhere on the lakefront for lunch. Retrace along waterfront back to the cars. The walk can be extended as far as we wish but will be about 12kms.

Monday's Walk 31 July

A reprisal of last week's Plan B (which the three of us who showed up didn't need as we opted for a relatively dry walk up the Motatapu):

Cairnmuir landslide. A walk up to the head of the Cairnmuir landslide control structure, the prominent earthworks visible across Lake Dunstan 4 km south of Cromwell. 4 km each way via a good 4WD track, steep in places, with a height gain of about one and a half Mt Irons.

Plan B: Cairnmuir landslide. A walk up to the head of the Cairnmuir landslide control structure, the prominent earthworks visible across Lake Dunstan 4 km south of Cromwell. 4 km each way via a good 4WD track, steep in places, with a height gain of about one and a half Mt Irons.

A rerun of last Monday's rained out Motatapu Gorge walk. Return the same way. The track is mostly in good condition but has a few muddy sections, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Monday`s Walk 17 April 2017

Sheehey Lake  or to be strictly accurate Sheehey Lake Bed (or maybe puddle after this latest rain)  which is hopefully Monday`s destination. Approx. 5km distance to a point just beyond the lake bed for lunch and return the same way. Views all around and down to Lake Dunstan.

Plan A - The walk starts as for the Cairnmuir Trail (Clyde end) and then veers off to the right.
Drive through Clyde and over the  bridge below the dam onto Earnscleugh Road then after about 1km take the track signposted right to the Lookout. At the Lookout car park we need to drive further to a car park for the trail. This section of the track however requires a 4WD/SUV type vehicle so at the Wanaka meeting point we will need to ensure we have enough vehicles. If it turns out we don`t have enough then ....

Plan B - Mt. Allen Drive to  the Crown Range Saddle car park (1076m) then walk the track to Mt.Allen 1492m. optional ascent for lunch. Approx. 7km one way. Return same way.

Monday`s Walk 3 April

What do you call a lake without any water ? Sheehey Lake which is hopefully Monday`s destination. Approx. 5km distance to a point just beyond the lake bed for lunch and return the same way. Views all around and down to Lake Dunstan.

Plan A - The walk starts as for the Cairnmuir Trail and then veers off to the right.
Drive through Clyde and then take the track signposted Lookout. At the Lookout car park we need to drive further to a car park for the trail. This section of the track however requires a 4WD vehicle so at the Wanaka meeting point we will need to ensure we have enough vehicles. If it turns out we don`t have enough then ....

Plan B - Long Gully Hut on the Carrick Water Race. An historic water race man`s hut. Drive through Bannockburn and park up on the Nevis Road. Drop down to Duffer`s Saddle, pick up the water race and follow it on the true left to Long Gully Hut. Again about 5km one way. These water races are remarkable pieces of work and the Carrick Water Race is still in operation today feeding Bannockburn`s vineyards. If Plan A is feasible then we will do this walk later in the month.

Unfortunately I am still hamstrung so the walk will be taken by my glamorous assistant aka my wife. Cheers Glyn

Monday's Walk - 27 March 2017

Option 1
Sawpit Gully Trail - Arrowtown; weather permitting!
2 - 3 hour loop - Grade: Medium - High Fitness

Autumn is here; a perfect time for us to check out the Autumn colours around Arrowtown. This is a great loop trail with a variety of scenery such as piles of stone gold-mining tailings near the creek, and vegetation varying from Beech Forest pockets to tussock covered slopes interspersed with prickly matagouri and sharp pointed speargrass. We'll come across the remains of an old stone hut which was once home to a succession of gold miners. Up the hill we'll meet the Big Hill trail at Eickhardt's Flat and walk down towards Arrowtown with Lake Hayes in full view.
Maybe a coffee or tea in Arrowtown afterwards?

Option 2
If the weather's poor we'll opt for a walk closer to home in a reasonably sheltered area:
The Upper Clutha Track from Halliday Road.

Monday 20th March 2017

The walk today is along the Lake Hawea shoreline, with great views, to the beach opposite Silver Island – (6 km, about 1 ½ - 2 hours one way). We drive from Wanaka via Campbell Rd to Gladstone, then via Timaru Creek Rd and Dingleburn Rd (gravel roads) to the car park (44km - about 1 hour). It is an easy walk on a 4WD road through tussock farmland and Kanuka bush, and under soaring rock faces to the beach near the Silver Burn. (There are sandflies there and at the car park)

The weather forecast is for high cloud and Nor-westerlies.

Leader: Chris Kjelgaard

Monday 13 March 2017

The walk today is to Colquhouns Beach, 7km (about 2 hours one way). The track and 4WD road from the Homestead Bay car park at West Wanaka is an easy walk to a beautiful beach on the shores of L. Wanaka with a view out to Mou Waho Island on one side and Mt. Alta on the other. (There are sandflies at the lake.)

The weather forecast is for cooler south-easterlies with maybe an occasional shower – so how far we go is weather dependent.

Leader: Chris Kjelgaard

Monday Walk 6th of March 2017

Option 1
It looks like we may be in lucky enough to sneak this one in before the weather will turn sour: Millennium Track, starting from our usual Monday morning meeting point to Glendhu Bay via Ironside Hill, to some of us better known as One Tree Hill.
Obviously we will have to arrange for a car shuffle, any volunteers for this, please be at usual meeting point by 08.45 am to help drop off some cars at the Glendhu Bay end!
Anybody who's keen to go for a swim while some of us will be collecting the cars in Wanaka, please feel free to bring togs & towel.

Option 2
If weather's poor we'll opt for the Upper Clutha Track from Halliday Road.

Monday 27th February

Sawyer Burn Track

The walk this week goes from Kidds Bush carpark up to the bush line towards Sawyer Burn Hut. This is a tramping track and the climb is steep,
there are also a couple of rocky sections that may require some clambering over before we break through the bush line.
It will be a lovely walk for a warm day and we will be rewarded by the views as we come out of the bush to find our lunch spot.

Leader: Ruth Harrison

Monday 20th February

Young River

We head up past Makarora to the Blue Pools track where our walk starts. We may need to be patient crossing the first swing bridge and again at Blue pools but once past there we will probably have the track to ourselves.
its through the woods with a steep scramble up and over a bluff (not a long section of the walk - probably 20 minutes) and down to the mouth of the Young River where we find a spot for lunch.
Depending on the river on the day we have a choice of doing several river crossings or returning by the same track but you may want to bring river shoes.

Monday 6th February 2017 Fernburn

This weeks walk is up the Fernburn. The weather forecast is not particularly good so how much of the walk we do will depend on what is happening with the weather. The walk is about 2 hours one way and
we do have shelter in the bush part of the walk.

The beginning of the walk crosses farmland and is flat pasture. The second part of the walk is on a tramping grade track which starts in a beech forest.
There is a climb to the bush line - not excessively steep or long but there is a fallen tree to clamber over and some narrower parts of the track and of course some muddy bits - we will need to watch our feet.
About 20 minutes out from the bush line we will be beside the Fernburn for lunch.

There is an option for a faster group to go onto the Fernburn Hut about 45 minutes farther on than where I expect the main group to lunch - there would need to be a group leader for this.

Monday's Walk: 30 January 2017

An optimistic read of tomorrow's forecast suggests light and variable winds before the nor'wester returns mid-afternoon.

Plan A (light winds): Old Woman Hut. Drive to Duffers Saddle on the Nevis Road and climb 270 m over 6 km to Old Woman Hut. Subalpine walk with great views.

Plan B (strong winds): Bannockburn Bridge to Kawarau Gorge. Undulating 5 km through old gold workings along the north bank of the Kawarau River.

This sheltered bush walk climbs from Davis Flat to the Haast Pass, and thence to a scenic lookout. Waverers may be encouraged by the prospect of afternoon coffee at Makarora.

Shek Harn Reserve

A short but scenic walk in the upper Fraser River valley behind Earnscleugh, through a classic piece of dryland Central Otago to a historical reserve with well preserved relics of the Chinese gold mining days. Could include an afternoon café stop at the Old Post Office in Clyde.
