Monday 19th December 2022

Meet Brian and Marjon at 9:30 for an expedition. We drive to the Bannockburn Bridge, parking on the right just before the bridge.
The walk starts on the familiar path up the true left of the Kawarau River, but continues on towards the Goldfields Mining Centre. The last time Brian went this way the path eventually became overgrown - a good point to turn back. There is a little rain forecast for the afternoon.

Monday 12 December 2022

Meet at the usual car park on the lake front, west end of Roy's Bay at 0930.

Forecast: Partly cloudy. A chance afternoon or evening shower. Light winds, afternoon northwesterlies.  Expected high of 25 C.

Proceed to the boat ramp reserve at the north end of Glendhu Bay.  Walk from there around the lake to Damper Bay and return. This is a total distance of roughly 12kms.  Usually at this time of year we have the AGM at the conclusion of the walk but that will not happen this year.  The AGM will take place next February.
Also, traditionally we have a 'shared plate'  this day as it is the last walk of the year.  Given that there has been no notice given about that this month there is no expectation that anyone should be taking any food to share tomorrow.  A coffee and/or ice cream afterwards at some agreed venue would work.

Wanaka Walkers Monday 5th December 2022:

Alfern Reserve:  A  there & back walk on the Queensbury Hills with spectacular views of the Upper Clutha Basin

  • We will start at DOC Queensberry car park and climb towards the Pisa Range Ridge Track. This is a steady climb through farmland, up past the Alfern Conservation Area and its small remnant grove of kānuka and Hall's tōtara.

We climb over the stile into the Pisa Conservation Area and follow the farm track towards a suitable & lunch spot amongst the rocks.  We can take in the panoramic view over the Upper Clutha basin from Lake Hāwea to the southern end of Grandview Ridge.

This is  about a 4km one way with a 450 height gain. We will simply return downhill the way we have come.

  • Getting there:  Drive 20 km south of Wānaka along SH6. Turn right into Pukekowhai Drive and drive up to the T junction at the top. Turn left into Wailana Heights Drive until you reach the DOC Queensberry car park on your right.

Meet at 0930 at the usual spot by the lakeside, to sort out carpooling.
