Destination: Hillend lookout
A short and local walk up to the cell phone towers above Hillend Station from Timber Creek on the Cardrona Road (4.5 km each way) for one of the best views over Wanaka and Roys Bay in the region.
Mike Scurr at Hillend Station has given us permission to cross his land, but has asked that we clear the property as quickly as possible after midday as he has a carrot drop planned for the afternoon. Our options are therefore to have a quick and early lunch at the high point (785 m) followed by a fast exit, or to defer lunch until our return to the cars. If we go for a later lunch we also have the option of walking down to the Cardona River from the Larches car park for a riverside picnic.
To ensure we use the available time as efficiently as possible, please wear your walking shoes from the outset so we can start walking as soon as we reconvene at Timber Creek.
