Monday 17th December AGM and shared Christmas Picnic to follow

We shall take a gentle amble around the Hawea/Newcastle track including the Butterfields wetlands area where we will find a secluded spot for the AGM.
We  then return to the cars which have previously been parked under some large shady trees to enjoy our Christmas Picnic.

Leader;  Jane Baker

At the Wanaka Walkers away week in Glenorchy attended by 36 walkers a poll was taken about whether the WW group would support a proposed subscription of $40.00 per person to buy two GPS/UHF 2 way communication devices. These would enable the Trip Leader to be in touch with the 'tail end charlie' during the walks and give us a reliable way of communicating any difficulties or incidents on the walks. This was supported by a large majority and donations were made immediately by many present.

Monday's Walk: 10th December 2018

Deep Gully - Eastern Hills loop track 10.5 km (3 - 5 hr according to DOC)

We will park in the Sandy Point conservation area car park on SH8a (on Wanaka to Tarras Highway).  About 5 - 7 mins drive from the Luggate bridge, a small car park on the right. The tracks start across the road from (and slightly north of) the Sandy Point car park.
A poled route ascends the Eastern Hills Track up onto the Grandview ridge for great views over the upper Clutha valley, before descending  Deep Gully back to the starting point. (the usual way is the opposite but the thinking is the best views will be from the top and down Deep Gully).
There is 680 metres of climbing/descending with 95% of the climbing in the first 5km.

Two notices
1. On 17 Dec there will be a short walk to the lunch spot where the AGM will be held.  Don't forget your lunch! There are vacancies on the committee.

2. There was a meeting of those who took part in the Glenorchy walk-fest at which it was agreed by unanimous vote that a GPS/shortwave radio should be purchased by the club.  A donation has already been given but a further $40.00 per person from each club member is required to complete the purchase.
