Brian Cleugh Memorial Gathering

BRIAN CLEUGH MEMORIAL GATHERING

After the recent sad death of Brian Cleugh, our club will now hold a memorial, in conjunction with the Wanaka Walkers group.

This will be held on WEDNESDAY 6th MARCH. We will meet at the usual place at the lakefront at 9am to carpool, and will then drive to Glendhu Bay and park at the little DoC carpark before the campground. From here, we will take a very short walk along the lakefront (only about 15 mins) to a place where we can all gather.

A few people will talk about Brian's involvement in our groups, and then the floor will be open for everyone to share their memories and special thoughts, so please spare some time to recall those.

Please bring your thermos/morning tea to enjoy afterwards before we return. Something to sit on would also be a good idea.

Please also think about any past members who may be interested in attending, and let them know.

If the weather looks dubious, please consult either the UCTC blog or the Wanaka Walkers blog after 8pm on the Tuesday evening to confirm if it is going ahead, or an alternate date planned.

If there is anything else you wish to know or add, please contact Karen directly at karenslogohq@yahoo.co.nz or 021443740.

Monday's Walk: 25 February 2019

Shek Harn Reserve
Shek Harn is Cantonese for big stone ditch, and this reserve at the base of the Old Man Range behind Earnscleugh has many remnants of early alluvial gold workings and Chinese dwellings. The drive is a little longer than usual - an hour to Earnscleugh followed by 20 minutes up the gravel road to Fraser Dam Road. This is classed as dry weather only but is normally easily negotiable by car. The return walk into the body of the reserve takes about 90 minutes each way, with good views of the Fraser River cascading through its gorge. Mandatory café stop in Clyde on the way home.
Starting time: 9:00 a.m.

Monday 18th February

Crown Peak Track
Parking is off Cardrona Rd and the track starts across the stile and follows Coal Creek for a little then turns up a valley. We walk up the 4 WD track until we meet a pond. Our route then leaves the 4WD track and turns up a steep ridge. Somewhere on this ridge will be our lunch spot - we are definitely not going to Crown Peak!
Weather might be a bit drizzly but if that is the case Cardrona Hotel will be a hot prospect.
