Monday’s Walk 19th June 2023

Meet at 9.30am usual place down by the waterfront carpark opposite McDougall Street.

The weather forecast is partly cloudy with areas of morning frost and fog  (9 degrees max/ 4 degrees min).  If West Wanaka  (Plan A) looks foggy it may be a better option to travel towards Makarora  (Plan B) and climb above the fog. We can decide at the waterfront carpark.

Plan A - Colquhouns Beach: 7km/2-3hr one way

The track and farm road from Homestead Bay car park at West Wanaka are an easy walk to a beautiful beach on the shores of Lake Wanaka, with a view out to Mou Waho Island on one side and Mt Alta on the other.  The track may be muddy in places. There may be sandflies at the lake. Please have $10 for your driver.

Plan B – Boundary Creek: 6km/1 ½-2 hr one way

We may be able to get above the fog  climbing up to an old musterers' track, on the way to Makarora.  The 4WD track starts opposite the Boundary Creek campsite 50km/40min.from Wanaka on SH6 between Hawea and Makarora. It climbs 500m to a viewpoint looking back to the head of Lake Wanaka. We can follow the old musterers' trail to find a lunch spot above Boundary Creek gorge, then return the same way. Sturdy footwear will be useful. There is no water. Please have $20 for your driver,

MONDAY WALK 12TH JUNE 2023

DINGLEBURN TRACK.EASTERN SHORE OF LAKE HAWEA

We will meet as usual at the lakefront at 9.30 at the car park at the end of Mc Dougall St.
Drive to John Creek and follow the road round to the right. We take the dirt road along the eastern shore of Lake Hawea to the DOC car park which is on the right. This is a 40 klm drive one way , 8 klms north of Timaru Creek. There is a toilet and an info board at the start of our walk.
It is an easy track with stunning views along the shore of the lake to Silver Island Bay about 13 kms return.
Although the dirt road is in good condition  and the shallow fords easily managed we would prefer to use 4WD''s.
Sandfly repellent may be required when we stop for lunch.
Look forward to seeing you,
