Monday’s Walk 16 June 2025

Glendhu Bay Track and Roys Peak Track as far as the grave site.

 

Meet at 9.30am at the waterfront car park opposite McDougall Street.

Description: A 10 km. return walk from the Waterfall Creek car park (to get there take the Mt Aspiring Rd then turn right down Ruby Island Road to Waterfall Ck bridge), along the Glendhu Bay track (a well-formed shared track) to where a left hand shortcut through farmland leads to the Mt Aspiring Rd. 600m further on is the start of the Roys Peak Track where we will climb the zig zag track to the grave site at about 640m, have lunch and return via the same route to the carpark. Roys Peak Track may be a bit rough with recent frosts. Total estimated time about 4 hours. Forecast is for low cloud, fog over lake, light winds so maybe clearing in the afternoon, 5°/1°C.

Monday's Walk 9 June 2025

Fern Burn Track (2hours/ 3-4 km one way)

 

Meet at 9.30am at the waterfront carpark opposite McDougall Street.

Drive 15km on Mt Aspiring Road past Glendhu Bay, turn left at Motutapu Road and continue 3km to carpark on left. The track follows the true right of the Fern Burn through grassy flats, recently fenced off and planted in natives, then shrubland to remnant beech forest  (red, silver and mountain beech) in the Stack conservation Area. A little further on the bridge has been restored over the cascades and waterfalls.

Expect a bit of frost, mud, cow pats - and shade in the forest. Sturdy boots - and poles could be useful.

Weather forecast: partly cloudy, 5°/3°.

Monday's Walk 2nd June 2025

Colquhouns Beach: 7km/2-3hr one way

 

Meet at 9.30am usual place down by the waterfront carpark opposite McDougall Street.

Take the Mt Aspiring Road past Glendhu Bay, turn right to West Wanaka, over the Matukituki River Bridge to the Minaret Burn carpark.

The Minaret Burn track and farm road from the car park is an easy walk to a beautiful beach on the shores of Lake Wanaka, with a view out to Mou Waho Island on one side and Mt Alta on the other. 

The weather forecast is mainly fine (11°C/7°C)

There may be sandflies at the lake. Track may be muddy in places. Please have $5 for your driver.

Monday Walk 26 May

Tuohys Saddle Turn left towards the Snow Farm but across the bridge turn right to the car park a few hundred metres further on (through a couple of gates). It should be fine although showers are possible in the afternoon, probably well after we're done. Keep an eye out for NZ falcons!

Carricktown. Drive through Bannockburn to Schoolhouse Road then right
again into Quartzville Road up to the gate at the start of the 4WD track
leading to the goldfield ruins. The track goes up to and past the
waterwheel but we won't be going that far.

start of the walk just past bridge. Walk is a steady climb up a 4WD
track with glorious views.

Monday's walk 28th April 2025

Up the Dunstan Lake track from the Clyde Dam. We drive to Clyde, cross the red bridge and turn right into Fruit Growers Road. Follow this and park by the camping area by the lake. Hopefully there will not be too many cyclists and anyway the track is mostly wide enough. After enough kilometers we will stop for lunch, then return the same way.

Sawpit Gully for the Autumn colours - drive to Arrowtown and (if possible, park) meet by the Chinese village. We will go anti-clockwise with lunch at the high point - with an optional side trip to the top of German Hill.

Dry Creek. Drive to the DOC car park halfway along Ardgour Road behind Tarras. Last time we stayed low in the valley - so this time we will turn up onto the ridge that leads to Cloudy Peak. Rain is supposed to stay away until 4pm, but the forecast keeps changing.

Walk for Monday 31st March

Meet at the waterfront carpark almost opposite McDougall St ready for a 9.30 departure.

Weather forecast: Mostly cloudy. Northwesterlies in the afternoon. High of 21.

Destination 45th Parallel.

Description. We will drive to Clark Rd opposite the Pisa Moorings and park. Take a track leading up to the ridgeline and traverse the tops over the 45th Parallel. A steep downhill to Lowburn and across the road taking the shared biking and walking track back through the Pisa Moorings and to our cars. Approx 10 kms. Possibility of icecreams at Jacksons.

Walk on Monday 24th March

Meet at the waterfront carpark (almost opposite McDougall st) ready for 9.30 departure.

Weather Forecast: Cloud clearing. Light winds. 12 to 20 degrees.
Destination: Grand View Track
Description: We'll try again for the Grand view track starting at the end of Nook Rd. The trig is 9 km with 1,000 m of climbing so an 18 km return trip. However we'll see how far we go for lunch and then return. There are a few streams to cross so after the wee rainfall you may get wet feet. Poles will be useful to cross over.

Monday 17th March

St Patrick's Day Walk

Meet at lake front ready to depart at 9.30. The weather forecast is not great so we'll have options.
Plan A. Good weather… we'll head for the Grand view track at the end of Nook Rd. The trig is 9 km with 1,000 m of climbing so an 18 km return trip. However we'll see how far we go for lunch and then return.
Plan B. If the weather isn't looking conducive to a longer day we'll head out to the Motutapu River track. 10kms return with undulations.

Monday 10 March 2025 Diamond Lake and Rocky Mountain

We will meet at McDougall Street car park for 9:30 am. 

The hike is about 7.5 km return with about 500 m of elevation. Once above the lake we will travel left in a figure 8 pattern. Lunch will be at the top of Rocky Mountain.

Monday Walk 3rd March 2025 Colquhouns Beach

As usual, we will meet McDougall Street parking lot at 9:30 am. It may be raining so we will reassess at that time.

The plan is to drive to West Wānaka and park at Homestead Bay. From Homestead Bay, the walking track undulates gently above the Lake Wānaka shoreline until it meets a 4WD track. About 2 – 3 hours (7.5 km) from Homestead Bay a track leads off to the right to Colquhouns Beach.

Bring rain gear and lunch.

Monday's Walk 24th February 2025

Destination: Breast Hill track
Description: A short (7 km) return walk up the Breast Hill track from John Creek on Lake Hawea, following part of Te Araroa. From John Creek we'll walk along the Timaru Creek Road for 1 km to the Te Araroa trail junction, where a well-graded zig-zag climbs 300 m to a small saddle at the 700 m contour.  Above this point the track follows the ridgeline with three secondary summits over the next 1.5 km providing possible turnaround/lunch spots at 870 m, 900 m, and 960 m. The track is easily followed but contains several short steep sections where rocky handholds may be welcome. Petrol donation $5 per person.

Monday's Walk 17th February

Destination: 45th Parallel Circuit
Description: An easy 10 km circuit starting from Clark Road opposite Pisa Moorings on SH 6, climbing 100 m to the top of the terrace above the 45th Parallel marker and then dropping down to the Lowburn Arm of Lake Dunstan for lunch at the Lowburn Domain. Return via the Lowburn to Pisa Moorings cycle trail. Petrol donation $5 per person.

Monday's walk - 10 February

Meet at the usual place ready to leave at 9.30.

We will travel to the Albert Town campsite and park at the start of the Dean's Bank track. Our walk will follow this and then the Dublin Bay track to Dublin Bay.

We will have lunch, and an optional swim there, before retracing our route back to the car. 12km approx in total with some small undulations.

The forecast is warm and any rain should clear before we start.

Destination: Old Woman Hut (Ignore my previous post re Haast Pass Bridle Path!) 
Description: A 10 km return walk from Duffers Saddle behind Bannockburn to the Old Woman Hut, with expansive views over Cromwell and Lake Dunstan to the north and the Nevis Valley and Hector Mountains to the west. The Nevis Road to Duffers Saddle is readily negotiable by car but is unsealed and perhaps better suited to a 4WD. Petrol donation $10 per person.

Plan A was for Mt.Crichton loop, 12km beyond Queenstown, a 6.4km loop. But there is a bridge missing at Maori Gully which would involve a (small) river crossing.
Plan B is the Bridle Track - Davis Flat to Haast Pass and lookout and return, about 7km. Perhaps some risk of rain
Opinions will be sought and ignored at the lake front.
Plan B was chosen.

Monday's walk 13th January 2025

Lindis Peak. Starting from Old Faithful Road at 360m the track rises to Lindis Peak at 1226m for panoramic views. Returning the same way for a total of 13km. DOC predict 5-6hr but we will not be in a hurry, with regular drink and scenic stops; so probably no coffee stop in Tarras.
