November Trip 2025

This year’s away week is Catlins 10th to 14th November.

Accommodation

Catlins Lodge and Campground near Owaka - there is a range of accommodation available. Look on the web page thomascatlins.co.nz to decide what type of accommodation you want to book then email janatkinson@xtra.co.nz to make the booking, letting her know you are with the Wanaka Walkers. Do not use the online booking on the web page as the lodge is closed and the owner is overseas. There are other Motels a short drive away if that is what you prefer.

Self cater or eat out at local restaurants to suit yourself. We will meet each night at about 5pm for drinks and nibbles in the communal area. We will eat out together on the Thursday evening

Walks

Proposed Walks – Actual schedule will depend on the weather and tides and preferences of those present. Low Tide is at 8.30am on the Tuesday

  1. Catlins River track. Preferably split into 2 groups starting from each end and key swap in the middle. About a 5 hour walk.
  2. Cathedral Caves followed by the Tahakopa Loop track. Through bush to the beach and back along the beach on Old Coach Road track to estuary. Both walks about 1-2 hours.
  3. Surat Bay to Cannibal Bay return. (3 hour walk) Surat Bay is a beach walk so best done at low tide to provide space to walk around sea lions. Followed by Nugget Point Lighthouse (About 1 hour walk)
  4. Other Short Walk Options with coffee stops for wet days
    • Tunnel Hill – on the main road before Owaka -20mins
    • McLean Falls – Tautuku -45mins nearby Whistling Frog Café
    • Niagara Falls – 15mins – nearby café (Can combine with visit to Curio Bay)
    • Pounawea Bushwalk – 45 mins (combine with Jacks Blowhole -1 hour) coffee in Owaka

Arrival meeting Monday 5.30 at Thomas’s Catlins Lodge and campground for drinks and nibbles and briefing

Dinner

Dinner Thursday night. Plan is to eat at the Lumberjack café.
