Monday’s Walk 20th May 2024
Lake shore walk, Mt.Burke Station 13km/4.5hrs return
Meet at 9.30am, usual place down by the waterfront car park opposite McDougall Street.
The forecast is for an odd early shower, then becoming fine ( 2°/ 9°C.)
Drive 9km from Wanaka on the L.Hawea/Albert Town Rd to Maungawera Road on LHS, then drive 8km towards lake. Stop before a gate with an old wheel, turn right, drive through the open gate and a dry stream to some trees and park (option: stop before the stream and park, if the road is too rough).
It's a lovely walk along the shingly shore, then a 4WD track through manuka and totora, past Stevenson's Island, to gumtrees and poplars on a terrace looking up to the Neck and the snow covered Buchanan Peaks beyond.
The recce was done before this latest weather event, so the track may now be a bit muddy in places. Sturdy boots are advised. There are some old easily negotiated wire fences.
Please have $5 for your driver.
